To everyone who is looking for a place to hold your Open Studio I finally have an answer for you. To everyone who has been putting off signing up for Beacon Open Studios because you don’t have a proper studio in Beacon and aren’t sure where you can set up for the weekend I have a solution for you.
The years of a surplus of cheap studio space in Beacon have come to an end. Galleries have closed and artists are scrambling. We are still an art town but many of us are making art in our homes and private spaces not suitable for public access. To respond to the needs of artists who want to participate in Beacon Open Studios but fall into that category we are taking a page from Art Basel Miami and from the Lost Horizons Night Market
What the truck?
We are very excited to announce the creation of Truck City 2011! This year artists are encouraged to rent moving trucks (Uhaul or others) and create your own gallery or installation on wheels. Trucks can then be parked together in a Truck City for visitors to wander through at their leisure. We are securing the permission to use the parking lot of the Beacon DMV building at 223 Main St. for our BOS Truck City. You can rent your truck for as long or short as you need, fix it up to your liking at home and drive it to Truck City for the BOS weekend. Your temporary studio could be right on Main St where no one will miss it!!! No landlords to deal with, no leases other than the truck (A recent inquiry to the local Uhaul rental facility shows that small trucks are renting for $19.95/day).
If you have already signed up and want to hop on board this plan send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org saying “I want to be in Truck City!”
