I know there is a planned development there.  Is it underway?  They have started tearing down the buildings.

Yeah, Andy, Mark:

 

Anne is right to point out that this is an island of residential between parkland. Seems kind of odd to wake up to the guys fishing on the elevated boardwalk outside your window looking in while you cook breakfast in your bathrobe and joggers and teenagers constantly trespassing outside your windows at all hours of the day and night. People are always trespassing on the current property. Just because there's condos there, they won't stop. And of course there are the make out sessions and drug using goes down in the parking lot there. That's not going to stop either.

 

People are going to treat this residential property as a parkland, and you can't really hold it against them, since it's basically an island of residential surrounded by parkland.

 

What I'm saying is: legally it's a residential situation, but in actual point of functionality, people might not be too happy with their living area constantly trespassed by the public, which is obvious and inevitable. Unless you're going to build high fences around the whole thing, which of course ruins that which makes the place attractive as potential residences in the first place.

 

So the development plans don't seem too well thought out to me.

Beacon recently adopted stricter rules and harsher penalties for abandoned properties in the city. The owner is tearing down the buildings to avoid daily fines. The buildings being torn down are not necessarily historic, and have been allowed to deteriorate to the point that they are unsalvageable, and a danger to the kids who run around in there.

 

Some of the older structures were reroofed a few years ago, and there is a possibility those will be left standing. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

 

The bridge and the underpass issues would of course have to be resolved before any planning could take place. Nothing at all specific is on the radar at the moment as far as I know (which admittedly isn't much.)

 

Scenic Hudson owns land down there on either side of the complex.

Doesn't Scenic Hudson own it? I doubt they would build housing.....

If the bridge is the only access to the new development, that would be great!  But if they do a new bridge, AND still allow traffic to go back the other way, under the train tracks, that would be bad! (because there are enough cars that speed down those roads now!)

That's such a shame. They should have reused those good old buildings.

 

Apparently they are putting condos in there, but I don't understand access: there's park land north and south, the tiny slot for cars (no delivery trucks) under the Beacon Line tracks, and the demolished Tioronda Bridge to the East.

 

I guess they are going to rebuild the bridge, they have to, for access (which is good, actually).

 

But I don't understand condos in the middle of a park.
