We need your support: Bikeable Beacon and Scenic Hudson has been advocating that the city of Beacon put sharrows on Main Street (and other thoroughfares of the city) for some time. Sharrow is short for 'shared lane bicycle marking', and painting them on Main Street would make clear the current regulations for bikes, which is a/ no bikes on the sidewalks, and b/ bikes and cars share the pavement. This is not an intitiative to change any traffic laws, or to create designated bike lanes: it is simply an effort to paint these symbols on the surface of Main Street to reinforce the current traffic rules, and make the streets safer for bicyclists, and the sidewalks safer for pedestrians.
Please read this longer post on Beacon Streets about the sharrows initiative, and sign the petition to show your support. The City Council is voting Monday on supporting our grant proposal for funds to support the costs of painting sharrows on Main Street, and we would like to show broad support for the intitiative.
