Beacon Citizen Network (BCN): a place for neighbors to get the word out, be heard and stay informed in all matters concerning Beacon, NY.

Housekeeping: If you're mean to people you will be deleted

Hello BCN members,

First, I tried to be libertarian - to let this network self-regulate. Then, I posted user guidelines, urging respectful behavior. Then I tried ignoring bad behavior. But today I'm taking a long overdue step to rein in the nastiness.

Here are posts I've deleted today because they are overly sarcastic, mean-spirited and/or near-slanderous:

"The owner, like Tom Sawyer, seems to be able to find people to donate their professional services to his own profit-making venture for free."

"Awwww, poor Charlene, someone is making fun of her. LOL."

"Your experience is less a reflection on Isamu and more of an encounter with your own idiocy."

"Beacon was just fine before you got off the train with your crappy artwork and !*@&&^ attitude."

This network is a year old. It seems that a small handful of people are active on this site and I would like more people to feel comfortable engaging in the conversations here.

The handful of participants who are intent on sniping each other are ruining it for the rest of us and, like the loud, unruly patrons at a restaurant (who are a bit to intoxicated with their anonymity) will be shown the door if they are unable to control themselves. You know who you are, and you have been warned. Name calling, derogatory comments about someone's character or their business will be grounds for deleting your account. When accounts are deleted from a Ning network, all of the content posted by that user is deleted as well.

Understand that in no way do I mean that only nice things may be said about businesses or services or events in Beacon. I do however feel that criticisms may be discussed with tact and awareness. Singling out individuals for attack or ridicule is inappropriate and will not be tolerated any longer.

Since I don't read every post every day, please feel free alert me of new posts for my review by sending an email to as soon as possible.

- Turn on comment moderation for items you post. This allows you to monitor comments before they are added to a discussion or news post. You'll see this below an item as you are writing it:

Now on to better topics.

7/24/09 ADDENDUM: I was under a mistaken impression that Groups that were private would not be visible on the site without joining. This is not the case, which means that anyone can peruse the content of a group, even if they are just passing by. Because search engines will see this text as part of, it does not make sense for me to allow a group to exist in which members can participate in posting that is banned on the site as a whole. Therefore, I encourage anyone interested in completely a un-moderated forum to post elsewhere.

CORRECTION: I was able to view all content of groups with private membership because of my status as a network creator. If you would like a private group, please select "moderated membership" under the privacy settings when you first create a group. Those groups with moderated membership will NOT be moderated by me because they will not be available to the membership of the site at large, search engines, etc.

Great ! I'm glad that you understand all that, and to paraphrase a fictional character - "cool is as cool does" :-)

And if Kelly thinks my posting is mean, just delete away ! I don't take myself all THAT seriously to be bent out of shape by that. So, enough of this, more important (at least to me) things to do, like try and salvage some bit of hope of saving my garden veggies from blights and root rot. Time to enjoy a non-rainy day!

oh please - I would lift the ban on nmorgan, and just ignore her over-the-top posts, as well as many of CV's grandiose posts - other wise, there will be plenty more of them. Per that "sociopath" discussion, which I think is spot on (whose lesson I am unfortunately ignoring right now) - this is all just showering attention on people who, even based on their ramblings on the original, often post statements obviously geared towards getting attention. Really - are we all that self-important ? Isn't this just a place to post cool info about Beacon ? Can't we just ignore the ramblings of people who don't seem to have anything better to do?

I especially like that statement - " nmorgan, a Beacon fixture for years" - what, is she like the dummy light or something ? How is anyone here supposed to know she is a "fixture for years", based on the info she has posted ? Also love that comment about the City Attorney - sheesh - seems like we can all use a chill pill.

Gandhi was still respectful to the people he disagreed with. The British were not respectful to him.

Reporter: "What do you think of western civilization?"
Mahatma Gandhi: "I think it would be a good idea."

Civility is the opiate of the people.

Thanks Kelly,
I moved into town a couple weeks ago and was referred to beaconcitizen by a couple people. It's been a great way to acclimate to the area and all it has to offer.
The end.

Charlene: If you are baited and provoked repeatedly let me know. As you mentioned, you have repeatedly singled people out by name and made negative comments. That will no longer be permitted.
