Beacon Citizen Network (BCN): a place for neighbors to get the word out, be heard and stay informed in all matters concerning Beacon, NY.

Now is the time for all dedicated swimmers and anybody who wants to keep fit for very little money to listen up! ...  There is nothing better than getting in the water and swimming … your body will love you for it… You will give it a rest from gravity’s downward drag. You can move your arms and legs and feel the water’s wonderful buoyancy sweep you off your feet. But wait there is more; if you are a swimmer you could save your life or somebody else’s life. So come on people let’s do it. JOIN THE BEACON POOL AND FITNESS CENTER. The fitness center has all the machines needed for a great work out and the pool is Olympic size, well maintained and just the right temperature.  We the citizens pay for it every time the school tax bill comes around.  No matter what you heard around town; the city council doesn’t pay for the pool or fitness center or anything else connected to the school… this is another example of “say anything and do nothing” …  promises made by the Republican candidate for mayor... promises he can't keep.  Only we “the people” can save the pool and fitness center for the community use. We need 200 members…we are at 47 members… Can we do it? Yes we can! We already pay for the pool and fitness center, is it too much to ask for a few extra hours?  Right now we are not feeling the love;  the Beacon School Board is giving us until January to get to 200 members or else… YIKES!!!

Mary Ann, unfortunately there is not a family rate. It is $100 per adult, $90 per student.

I have three boys - is there a families rate?  My boys would probably love to use the pool over the winter and it would help me stay active if it is affordable.

I've been a member for a year.  Each day I go, I improve my health, my self confidence and my commitment to my family and community.  I've also met some very nice people along the way.

A decision by the Board of Education to close it would be short sighted and would cast a darker cloud over the relationship between the board/administration/faculty of the school district and the community at large.  The lack of transparency by the board and the arbitrary quota and deadline could hardly be called a good faith effort. Each member of the board and district staff owes the community more because of the simple fact that community access was a condition of the funding of the school.

At the city council debate this week there were cries for better resources for the community to assemble. It is a win-win to work together to expand use and private funding for the community resources made available to the public.  There is no better example of how we can get more with less.

All Beaconites who seek to grow the ties that bind us as a community should be behind efforts to save and enhance resources like this.

If it hasn't already been suggested, the board should consider allowing pledges from prospective members who would want to join next semester to count towards the arbitrary goal of 200 members.  As a measure of good faith, they might consider members that have pledged and paid for next semester to use the facility for the balance of the current semester.

@Amy: Last I heard, we were at 50 memberships. The membership is $100 per school semester. If you join now, your membership is good through January 27th. If we do not reach 200 memberships, the school board will discontinue selling memberships after this semester.

How many more memberships are needed to keep the pool/fitness center open?  Just wondering what will happen if we join and then the fitness center closes abruptly.  Will the money be refunded?

@Anna: It is also a fantastic pool. Much more affordable than All Sport, and All Sport's pool is not really for lap swimming. It is small and is kept at a hot temperature for physical therapy etc. Miserable for lap swimming. And very $$$. If you any ideas for publicizing, let me know! It would be great if we could get a group of swimmers together to brainstorm about how to get the word out--or we stand to lose access to the pool come January. You can email me off list if you want. If you "friend" me on Beacon Citizen I will send you my personal email address.

Thanks Melissa! I new there was a pool at the high school but had no idea the public could use it. I'll contact them for more info. That is definitely more reasonably priced then all sport! I wonder if there is more of a way to get the word out to us Beacon newbies??

@Anna: The pool is at the Beacon High School. It's at 101 Matteawan Road. It used to cost $100 per school year, but the price has doubled ($200 per school year) because the school board said there were not enough members to cover the cost of keeping staff, lights on etc. If we don't get 200 members, we will lose access to the pool, and maybe for good. For Info on how to sign up, call or email the Beacon High School Athletics Dept. Secretary, Athletic Department Mrs. Lisa Tompkins(845) 838-6900, ext. 3218  email

I didn't even know that there was a pool? Where is it? How much is it to join, etc?
