Does anyone know of any good natural swim spots that are NOT in the Hudson and are free? My wife and I just moved to Beacon a couple of years ago and don't know the area too well.

little late but Wilcox Park is a great place to go and may still be free for county residents, as it is a county run park.  it is off taconic state parkway, take Rt 199 Milan exit, make right at end of ramp, go down road maybe 2 miles and entrance is on your right.  nice shady spots, you can fish too and have another lake with paddle boats.  still may have miniature golf too.

Two I know of and have been to a number of times:

Lake Canopus:

Lake Taghkanic:

Both can be easily gotten to off the Taconic. Although Canopus is easier gotten to from Beacon by driving to Cold Spring, then turning onto Route 301. Taghkanic is farther away, an hour, just over the border in Columbia County, and Canopus is half an hour. But my wife and I like to take the kids to Taghkanic over Canopus because its larger and the water is less murky and swampy than Lake Canopus, which is smaller, and it seems to heat up in the Summer.

You can also boat and fish, but permits are required. You can camp at Taghkanic. Hiking at Canopus (Fahnestock). Both require a small parking fee, they both close at sunset all summer.

We just went to Taghkanic on Sunday. Crowded, $8 parking fee. But the kids had a blast. Bucket of chicken at KFC at exit 13, swim all day, fly a kite, ice cream at the concession stand by the beach before leaving, home before the sun sets. Good way to spend the day with the kids.

I'm sure there's other good swimming holes around.
