What the truck? Art in Hard Times
Beacon Open Studios is now in its third year—and growing. Beacon Open Studios is a free, city-wide art event invites the public into local artists’ studios, allowing visitors to chat with artists, view past and current works-in-progress, and get an up-close look at the at the art making process in a casual setting. Beacon is known as an art town; this is the only event in Beacon that truly gives you behind-the-scenes access to the creative community here. Participating artists include nationally and internationally exhibited names as well as those who will be showing their work for the first time.
One of the things that makes Beacon Open Studios unique is that we make an effort to help artists who have their work spaces in their homes or other private spaces not suitable for public access find a more public site to show their recent works. We are very excited to announce the creation of Truck City 2011 as a pop-up open studio site to fulfill this need. Participating artists will be renting moving trucks and creating their own galleries or installations on wheels. Trucks will be parked together in a Truck City in the parking lot of the Beacon DMV building at 223 Main St for visitors to wander through at their leisure during Open Studios hours.
This year’s Beacon Open Studios is scheduled for the weekend of September 24-25, 2011. The not-to-be-missed Kickoff Party happens Friday night Sept 23 at Hudson Beach Glass and will be sponsored in part by Chatham Brewing Co. Interested artists have until July 15th to sign up for Beacon Open Studios. Check the website for more details about how to get involved.
