Beacon Citizen Network (BCN): a place for neighbors to get the word out, be heard and stay informed in all matters concerning Beacon, NY.



I've been hearing about the airbnb phenomena; where homeowners (and often problematical when renters try it on the places they rent) rent out all or part of their place to people for short periods of time, like regular B&Bs, but w/o the breakfast.  A quick view of the website shows that at least 9 are listed in the city limits of Beacon, but what is really amazing, is there are at least 7 in a small cluster in Glenham, all within a few houses of each other (perhaps one owner spread the word and others decided it was a good way to make a few extra bucks?).  Anyway, I'd like to hear what people think about this.  I've heard it has become a problem in some locations in Beacon, due to extra cars on the street, and general disruption of a neighborhood.

If you think having strangers in your neighborhood is bad, come visit some of the neighbors I have to live with every single day.
I would genuinely like to know what "reasonable regulations" our local B&Bs are following that renters are currently exempt from. Does Elaine or anyone else here have that information?

Why are people allowed to run these business in residential neighborhoods? I do not want to live next to a house where strangers from the internet are in and out every week! This is not a "sharing" economy. This is a business in a family neighborhood. The people who run legal B&B's are fine and have complied with reasonable regulations.

Wow Erin!  That is the ultimate case in  point!  I did laugh at you second post though ;)

It seems the AirBnB people better start requiring proof of ownership for people who rent through their site, or they are likely to find a fat lawsuit on their hands (but unfortunately, like a lot of businesses, they may feel the occasional lawsuit is just the cost of doing business.  However, the negative publicity from such a lawsuit, if it makes widespread news, could be what makes them change their ways)

I should also tell you.....when my brother called them the next day they actually had to cancel peoples reservations....cause they were booked.

Well i'll tell you about my experience...  My brother and I rented to a couple that had a baby.  My brother lived in fishkill but i lived in the apartment above this couple.  I got a strange feeling one day that some thing wasn't right (making a long story short) I looked up sites that rented rooms out of private houses.... airbnb popped up....  i looked up beacon....and guess what i found??  MY HOME  for rent.   It wasn't even so much that they were renting their place out....they had all MY stuff.....firepit, adirondack chairs,grill, patio set, garden, sky chairs listed as AMENITIES!  and not only was the house available to rent by the room....they had their place listed as available to rent on a monthly basis( they would just go on a trip i guess)....  can you imagine if i saw strange people using my stuff and these people made money off it?   Probably the angriest i have been since i was a teenager.  Had to call my brother up at 11pm at night because i had to have him talk my down from seriously hurting these hipsters.  (i'm not an angry person normally) but I would say i'm definitely not a good sharer in this case. My brother luckily talked me down that night and no one died that night due to being bashed in the skull with a lap top.  My advice is....own the home you are renting out rooms in. :)

The link to Charlotte's Donkey Ranch clearly shows she is renting it for (basically) $400 a night on weekends, and she's booked. The price goes up to $450 per weekend night in May. So people are paying over $400 a night to rent a private home in Beacon (Fishkill proper).

As far as how that house came to be, from what I was able to find in an article I found online years ago, plenty of people in Beacon were upset about the development. It sparked some kind of agreement between Beacon and Fishkill that no future development on the mountain would be approved by Fishkill alone. Moving forward, Beacon gets final say on developments within eyesight of Beacon. Coincidentally, from what I've been told she agreed that it was just a single home and a barn and that there would be no further development up there. Now she's renovated the barn and is effectively running a rental business up there.

One person pushes/sneaks through and gets what they want, and blocks development for anyone who follows. Very clever. I guess they don't have to worry about neighbors moving in.

0Ah yes, Fishkill.  When I first moved to Beacon in 1999, I climbed up to the casino, and often on to the firetower, about twice a week. (I rented a place next to the old ski lodge)  One day, I noticed a recently wrecked car near the casino, off to the edge of the road that heads from there to the east; apparently wrecked by someone pushing a vehicle to its limits.  I pulled the VIN strip off the passenger door and went to the Beacon police dept to report it, and they told me Fishkill had jurisdiction, so I went there and reported it, handing in the VIN tag.  A few days later, when coming back from Manhattan on the train, I noticed smoke coming from up on Mt. Beacon.  When I hiked up there the next time, I saw that the wrecked car had been set on fire.  Coincidence?  I think not.  I believe they checked the VIN and traced it to someone they knew, told them to take care of the problem.  The VIN could still be obtained from the engine block, however, by burning it, I guess the owner could claim they didn't know how it got there, without conflicting evidence such as only their fingerprints, or hair, on the vehicle. (seems odd someone would burn a vehicle for that, but I don't know why else it would have been burned)

I think it's because it's in Fishkill, that legal loopholes over jurisdiction made the house possible. Of course that doesn't make it ok.

A little off topic (but maybe not), what is the story on the house on the mountain?  I've heard some interesting stories about how that place came to be.  I would love to hear the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth on who owns the house and how they obtained permission to build up there.

I don't know. It seems to me that the more popular options on AirBnB aren't the spare room or shared bathroom situations. AirBnB is equally about full house rentals (or full apts/lofts, cabins, etc), as true income property, or likewise, dual family homes, situations w/ separate entrances and facilities, etc.  The site has taken off because it's given property owners a new way to connect w/ short term tenants (day trippers, weekenders, etc), rather than long term lessees, and gives consumers more options and perhaps a more unique experience. Certainly the slope get a bit slipperier if you’re subletting out every unoccupied corner in your rented 1 bedroom house. But really, in a place like Beacon, people are looking for a place to stay near the mountain and the trails in a rustic and rural setting – a weekend getaway w/ their gf or whatever - not just a place to crash on a couch for a night, right? And no Beacon property on AirBnB is bringing in $400 a night. Not even Charlotte’s donkey ranch on the mountain:


I recommend checking out the user comments on some of the more popular AirBnBs in the area. You will see that many people do enjoy spending time here, to take advantage of all that Hudson Valley’s natural surroundings have to offer, and spend their money on Main Street. I use the sharrows on Main Street, btw. I bike to the station in the warm months, and take small comfort in knowing that motorists are made aware of the fact that the lane is to be shared. And as a driver, they obviously don’t bother me or cause me any inconvenience what-so-ever.
