Teenagers breaking into Beacon Terminal Associates in the middle of the day

So its the first gorgeous Saturday of spring, I'm doing my usual run, Dia is packed, there's 20 cars parked at Madam Brett, crowds of hikers and fishermen are to and from Dennings Point... and 3 teenagers are breaking into Beacon Terminal Associates, the old hat factory, right through the front door at 2:30 PM.

The door is locked, but the trick they are using is easy (obviously I'm not going into details on a public website). Who manages Beacon Terminal Associates? The City…

The Beacon Line Spur

You can run dinky trolleys instead of substantial rail cars on the Beacon Line (ground-level access and safer to run next to bikers and walkers near the rail line), not interfere with federal adequacy laws or Hudson Line rail traffic, and still reach Beacon Station.
At first glance, to use the Beacon Line, to get to the platform at Beacon Station, you have to cross the busy main Hudson Line tracks. MetroNorth, Amtrak, CSX: by federal law their…

4th grade class at J.V. Forrestal Elementary and Pete Seeger win Grammy

How cool is that? ;-)

Grammy for Best Musical Album For Children: "Tomorrow's Children," a CD by Pete Seeger with The Rivertown Kids and Friends

It's Pete's third Grammy. Congrats kids and Pete. And also congrats to Tery Udell, 4th grade teacher, and Dan Einbender, Hudson River educator, who made it happen!

Clearwater received a state Department of Environmental Conservation grant that allowed Hudson River educator Dan Einbender in…

The Beacon Line Project website: new content

Frequent issues involving Beacon's growth center on transportation. And we have a relic of Beacon's industrial past, the Beacon Line, running right through our city. Even more amazing (considering it is not currently used) is that the line is owned and maintained by the M.T.A.

The Beacon Line Project is a long term advocacy group centered on finding ways to use this line. Whether light rail, scenic walking, biking, alone or in combination, the Beacon Line Project aims to draw…

Creepy and cool: they are going to dig up the leather man

I don't know if he's part of the urban legend landscape of Beacon, but I was born in Danbury, grew up in Newtown (exit 11 on i84, strangely enough), and we would hear embellished stories about this guy:

For over 30 years, in the 1800s, like clockwork, he walked a regular 34 day circuit between New Haven and the Hudson River, sleeping in caves,…

Keeping the drumbeat alive on the Beacon Line

Visit the updated site:

New rants and thoughts on this brain dead obvious way to drive growth (and therefore lower taxes) in Beacon, as well as prevent Beacon becoming a parking lot for a growing Southern Dutchess: reopen the Beacon Line. Tie it to the T.O.D. issue. Don't let the MTA sit on this engine of growth for our little city and do nothing. Either reopen it, or get out of the way.…

TOD Reset: time to get serious on the Beacon Line

Now that the mayor and the city council have pushed the reset button on the TOD, a move which I and many others applaud, I respectfully call upon the city council and the mayor to include use of trail space along the Beacon Line as a demand in any new talks with the MTA, as a condition before the TOD moves forward again.

This is our Highline in Manhattan, this is our Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie. This is what the Beacon Line can do for…

Stony Kill stays open ;-)

Thanks to everyone who made it happen ;-) Thanks to the petition collectors, the petition signers, the petition posters, the emails, the phone calls, Mayor Gold and the city council... and the anonymous $30K donor!

Beacon is the new Rhinebeck (according to housing sales)

Only one area posted a gain in real estate prices in Dutchess County year-over-year: that was Beacon, up 1%.
Everything else went down, for an average of -10.3% countywide, in one year.
Second worst was Rhinebeck: -42.3% in prices, in one year. (Amernia was the worst at 44.8%.)

So it seems that all of the rich New Yorkers who used to buy weekend homes in Rhinebeck are now buying weekend homes in Beacon.

Read all about…

PoJo looking for freelance reporters in Beacon

I think the T.O.D. deserves a write up in PoJo. Someone who can neutrally sum up the positions for and against it. And they can make a little cash for the effort.

Is Beacon Rebuilding the Tioronda Bridge?

Last I heard it was to be rebuilt as a pedestrian bridge... but the Fire Department wanted their trucks to be able to get over it. I haven't heard anything else in awhile. Then I saw this today in the PoJo:…
