HYDROPOWER IN UNDEVELOPED STREAM REACHES. The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Water Power Technologies Office issued a request for information regarding challenges and opportunities associated with hydropower development in undeveloped stream-reaches (81 FR 78795). The office is also seeking input on the focus and structure of a potential funding opportunity to support research and development of advanced and/or non-traditional transformative hydropower technologies and project designs…

The "Putting Pandemonium" putting tournament at the Beacon Glades disc golf course is just 3 days away! (on Saturday, 22 August) (located off 9D south of Mt. Beacon lot, at the Settlement Camp)
Entries will be accepted on the morning of the tournament at the field house next to hole #1, beginning at 9am; tourney will start at 10am. It's still just $6 to enter, with…

I dropped by the Sunny Garden greenhouse (on Rt 9D near Stewarts) with my wife on Saturday and decided to buy a few more cherry tomato plants. I was happily surprised that ALL their vegetable plants are on sale! (my four plants, already with green tomatoes, were only 25-cents each!). It appears that all the tomato plant varieties have green tomatoes, so if you thought it was too late to plant, it looks like this is your opportunity to catch up! I don't know how much longer they will have…

I was looking at the Delta "Sky" magazine on a flight Friday and saw that Beacon was one of 10 featured locations in an article about places "on the water" (I think that's how it was framed) for New York city visitors to consider. City Island, West Point, and Rhinebeck? were included with the ten (Cold Spring wasn't). I'm not sure if it was the April or May issue. Beacon seems to be popular in these "list" kind of articles.

Last month I was searching for a used car and used CarFax to get a vehicle history report. The price for one report was $40, but I thought the odds of selecting the first used car we came across was not high, so I purchased 5 CarFax reports for $50. Well, we got the first car, and I now have 4 CarFax reports that have to be used within the next month. If you are in need of a report, send me the VIN, and I'll get the report for you. Whatever you want to give me in return is up to you, but…

The site below lists Beacon as one of the most internet-searched towns in the NE (which is used to indicate "town pride" by the website owners).

I watched the recent Beacon City Council meeting (on TV) where a consultant presented a proposal to replace existing streetlights with LED lights. I have several concerns regarding this:
1) why would the City of Beacon (us, the taxpayers) contract ANYTHING (of significant cost) without competitive bids being sought?
2) the projected "break even point" was, I believe 17 years! Does anyone think that it is wise to have the same company that is trying to get business also…

I ran by Madam Brett Park yesterday and saw they are doing some ground preparation for something behind the "Beacon Terminal Associates" building closest to the RR tracks. Does anyone know what they are doing?

You've probably seen the TV ads for "Start-up NY", the state program that offers tax-free (or maybe just tax-reduced?) status to businesses opening or re-locating to NY. I checked the website, and it appears the program is geared toward very large businesses/manufacturers. That may be a great program for the large businesses, but I think a program for small businesses could benefit towns such as Beacon. What's to prevent Beacon from starting its own, small-scale version of this program,…

I've been hearing about the airbnb phenomena; where homeowners (and often problematical when renters try it on the places they rent) rent out all or part of their place to people for short periods of time, like regular B&Bs, but w/o the breakfast. A quick view of the airbnb.com website shows that at least 9 are listed in the city limits of Beacon, but what is really amazing, is there are at least 7 in a small cluster in Glenham, all within a few houses of each other (perhaps one owner…

The Travel section of am New York (the free newspaper in Manhattan) listed Beacon as one of 5 suggested day trips, along with Philadelphia, New Paltz, Hudson, and Poconos.

Since I moved to Beacon in 1999, I've always wondered who plows snow on Dennings Avenue (the dirt road that leads from the recycling/sewage facility parking lot to Dennings Point.) There is only one house near the end of the road, and the "Beacon Institute" building is the only other building. If Dennings Avenue is not a city of Beacon Road (since it is not paved, it would seem not to be), then who is responsible for plowing it? I hope someone here can answer this question. Thanks.

My wife woke up this morning and turned on the Weather Channel to see a clip airing with some of the channel people (I don't know who) visiting a Beacon school (I don't know which one either). They were talking about how places like Beacon, although quite a distance from the coast, still need to be prepared for hurricanes, as we found out when the surge from Sandy caused flooding here, and during Irene, when we had a lot of trees down and flooding. Hopefully this will air at more…

I was down there yesterday and it looks like they may be building a new bridge there. Does anyone know if this is the case?

I heard a siren outside my house so I went to check it out and found several police cars and four (4) fire trucks, including one from Fishkill! I asked a police officer if there was a fire, and he said that smoke had been reported in a crawl space. Is there any wonder why our taxes keep going up when four fire trucks respond to smoke? I'm off Sargent Avenue, so how a Fishkill fire truck ended up all the way across Beacon from Fishkill is a mystery to me.

I know we already have some small manufacturers like those discussed in the article, but with much lower rents for both the businesses and workers, it seems that Beacon could attract many…
