LED streetlights in Beacon

I watched the recent Beacon City Council meeting (on TV) where a consultant presented a proposal to replace existing streetlights with LED lights.  I have several concerns regarding this:

1) why would the City of Beacon (us, the taxpayers) contract ANYTHING (of significant cost) without competitive bids being sought?

2) the projected "break even point" was, I believe 17 years!  Does anyone think that it is wise to have the same company that is trying to get business also…

Start-up New York

You've probably seen the TV ads for "Start-up NY", the state program that offers tax-free (or maybe just tax-reduced?) status to businesses opening or re-locating to NY.  I checked the website, and it appears the program is geared toward very large businesses/manufacturers.  That may be a great program for the large businesses, but I think a program for small businesses could benefit towns such as Beacon.  What's to prevent Beacon from starting its own, small-scale version of this program,…

4 fire trucks for "smoke in a crawl space"!

I heard a siren outside my house so I went to check it out and found several police cars and four (4) fire trucks, including one from Fishkill!  I asked a police officer if there was a fire, and he said that smoke had been reported in a crawl space.  Is there any wonder why our taxes keep going up when four fire trucks respond to smoke?  I'm off Sargent Avenue, so how a Fishkill fire truck ended up all the way across Beacon from Fishkill is a mystery to me.
