Restoring the Mt. Beacon Fire Tower

A restoration effort for the tower is nearly complete. The tower, when finished, offers amazing views from the summit and will be a hiking destination.

From the Poughkeepsie journal:

"The existing tower, built in 1931, was used by the state for more than 50 years to spot fires from the 1,650-feet peak.

Over the years, the tower was one of the draws to the top of the mountain. The Mount Beacon Incline Railway… Continue

Newburgh celebrity and a side of Pollo a la Brasa

I have to commend Paul Jr. of American Chopper: The Series for his excellent taste in restaurants. The Newburgh native was dining with friends at the 18 year-old, family owned Machu Picchu restaurant when my bf and I happened in for dinner.

I highly recommend the Peruvian classic pollo a la brasa - rotisserie chicken - with the green rice (arroz verde) and yucca frita (yucca… Continue

Easy hikes with kids (or without!)

We are lucky to live at the foot of the Hudson Highlands but if you've never ventured up "the hill", here are some great places to check out...

Easy/Moderate- "kid friendly"

1. Cornish Estates- park at Little Stony Point (Rt. 9D)

This is a great walk/hike. Can easily be done with children and even strollers as you walk up the old paved drive. The path turns to dirt quite a ways up, but still a relatively easy hike.

Map: East Hudson Map. Available at Mountain Tops.

Long Dock Groundbreaking Set for '09

According to Goldee Greene's article in the most recent Beacon Free Press, it sounds like there are several hoops still to be cleared by the project.

Here's a brief synopsis of the Beacon Free Press piece:

- City Council and Planning Board hearings are required before getting greenlight from state agencies

- A change in architects slowed the project

- New plans will have the hotel 55' high at highest point

- Doral Arrowood, a Rye Brook based hotel, will… Continue

Enjoying the harvest season

Summer is the most bountiful time of the year — tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, beans by the bushel. Our Sunday farmer's market is fantastic, but sometimes it's a good thing to see the food coming out of the ground. Should you desire to venture out to actual farms and enjoy blueberry and raspberry season (and apple season not too far off), I've put together a map of… Continue

Theater on Main could be a Big (not for profit) Deal

This is just to spotlight the scoop on the old theater on Main Street - as posted by member Cabot Parsons in the forums.

"There is currently a plan by a local nonprofit organization to renovate the theatre into a performing art and film center with three performance spaces: a 960 seat music hall, a 150 seat black box experimental theatre (with a resident theatre company) and a… Continue

I just found a link to this cute site by local artists that produces wooden bookmarks using high-quality woods and scrap hardwood whenever possible. Each one is handmade and topped with a protective water-based clear satin finish. They all feature either original drawings or a letter stamped directly onto the wood. They've sold their goods at the Rengade Craft Fair in Brooklyn recently.

River Pool is open!

The design of the partially submerged pool is environmentally sensitive and makes for a safe wading area that protects bathers from boaters and currents. With a permeable floor and sides that work as a below-water fence, the twenty-foot diameter wading pool allows river water to flow through it. The entire structure is supported by floating fiberglass seats in rainbow colors.

River Pool is a volunteer-run, non-profit. Click… Continue
