"Jazz Greats" The Paintings of Victor Kalin
The memorable work of illustrator, Victor Kalin, whose legendary jazz album covers are prized by music-lovers and collectors, alike, will be presented by the late artist's daughter, Rebecca Kalin.
Victor Kalin (1919-1991)
Artist, photographer and musician, Victor Kalin's love of jazz was life-long. Taking a year off from college, Kalin traveled throughout the Midwest, playing first trumpet in the Jimmy Caton Jazz Band.
His artwork was well-known to the post-World War II era - "The Golden Age of Illustration"—from coffee table magazines to paperback book covers to record album covers—including some of those most sought after by collectors.
Victor traveled to concerts and festivals with a press pass and camera, capturing images for illustrations on album covers, liner notes, concert programs and personal works of art. Some photos went directly into jazz magzines and books.
The “Jazz Greats” exhibition includes watercolor portraits of the musicians Kalin admired - referenced from his black and white 120mm photographs taken at the Newport Jazz Festival where, as friend of festival producer George Wein, he always enjoyed a front row seat.
