Steve Guyger & The Excellos with Dennis Gruenling
"Multi-talented Dennis Gruenling is a deceptively simple innovator on harmonica...lays down a flawless, wide spectrum of blues riffs." - Blues Blast
Dennis Gruenling is without a doubt one of the baddest, swingingest, most innovative harmonica blowers on the planet. His dynamic style draws inspiration not only from Blues icons like Little Walter, but from great horn players such as Lester Young and Illinois Jacquet. Equally adept at chromatic and diatonic harmonica, Dennis swings with a vengeance, blowing cool, soulful lines with natural ease.
"Guyger combines his tool, and soul, to make the harp sing, growl and roar like a freight train." - Boston Blues Society
Philadelphia is home to one of the finest blues harp players in the world, for nearly 40 years. 2009 Handy Award nominee Steve Guyger has been dishing out the finest blues. whether in a duo, trio, or with his band, The Excellos.
Steve has toured with the late Jimmy Rogers, among others, and played with many of the great Chicago bluesmen and contemporary players, yet remains one of the genre's best kept secrets. The late William Clarke called Steve “the best harp player I’ve ever seen.” Mark Hummel called him “a monster player.”
"[Radio Blues, Severn Records] is some damn fine dirty white blues, 100% in the tradition and made by a quintet nodding very heavily back to black origins." - acousticmusic.com
