Event Description

John Pielmeier Brings The Exorcist to the Stage

First performance to be in Beacon

Noted Broadway playwright, John Pielmeier (Agnes of God, The Boys of Winter, Voices in the Dark, Slight of Hand) has adapted The Exorcist for the stage with initial staged readings of the play produced by TrueNorth Theatre Project April 17, 18 and 19. Pielmeier will direct with TrueNorth actors portraying all roles. There will be two performances on April 17 and 18 at 7:30 at the Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries, 199 Main Street in Beacon and a 3:00 Sunday the 19th performance at the Butterfield Library in Cold Spring, NY. Seating is limited and is on a first-come basis. A donation is requested.

Said Pielmeier on his undertaking of William Peter Blatty's novel, "In February of 2008 I got this incredible opportunity to adapt Blatty's novel to the stage. I re-read the book - it's still quite extraordinary - but felt that the true horror of the piece was not to be found in pea-soup vomit or head-turning, but rather in the very nature of the conundrum: the demonic possession of an innocent child. The book, for me, is really a faith-based debate between Love and its Adversary. The Demon is a shape-shifting charmer whose goal is not the soul of a little girl but the souls of all those around her - and Father Karras, the priest who first confronts the situation, makes the sad mistake of trying to debate this entity. I wrote the piece with 21st-century doubters in mind - I'm very much among them (as is Father Karras) - and the Exorcist who leads us through the story is speaking directly to those who find the idea of possession an impossibility."

TrueNorth was founded by eight professional actors, writers and
designers who want to bring theatre "where we live". The
co-founders are Brad Bellamy, David Birn, Suzanna Hay, Lynn Hawley, Michael Heintzman, Kurt Rhoads, Nance Williamson, and Don Brown. www.truenorththeatre.org
