Event Description

The Beacon Sloop Club’s 2017 winter lecture series concludes on Thursday May 11th at 7:00 pm with, Nature’s New Deal: the Great Depression and Franklin Roosevelt in New York’s Hudson Valley - with Neil Maher, PhD., at the Beacon Sloop Clubhouse, 2 Flynn Dr., Beacon NY (adjacent to the harbor, across from the train station).

Franklin Roosevelt grew up along the banks of the Hudson River on his family’s estate in Hyde Park. Years later during the Great Depression, New Deal work programs created by President Roosevelt returned to the Hudson Valley.

Neil Maher’s interactive presentation takes you from FDR’s childhood home to the halls of Washington, D.C. and back again to the Hudson Valley illustrating how Roosevelt’s experiences in New York greatly influenced many of his later New Deal conservation programs.

This multimedia presentation includes of film clips from the 1930s, and will help participants understand that the seeds of our contemporary environmental movement were sown in Depression-era New York. Maher will focus in particular on Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and its impact on both the natural environment and local communities of the Hudson Valley region.

Neil Maher is an associate professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Rutgers University, where he teaches US environmental and political history. Neil has published articles in academic journals including the Hudson River Valley Review, and served as Historical Advisor for a PBS American Experience documentary on Franklin Roosevelt.

This free event is made possible through the NYS Public Scholars program with the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities. For more information visit our website or call (845) 463-4660, (914) 879-1082
