Event Description

The Ann Street Gallery is delighted to present In Rare Form: Contemporary Sculpture Exhibition, with an Artist Reception on Saturday, March 12 from 6:00-9:00 pm.

This exhibition explores the recent works by a group of contemporary artists charting the changing attitudes toward sculpture in our present day and the array of non-traditional materials employed (such as feather dusters, foam, plexiglass, fur and found objects) in the fabrication of their works.

A diverse array of materials has always been used in sculpture to produce works of art. However, traditionally, artists sought to produce works that would be deemed permanent by choosing materials for their durability, such as
bronze or marble. This changed in the 20th Century with Picasso, who reinvented the art of sculpture by constructing his sculptures from ready made and found objects. Since, sculptors have sought new ways and created artistic innovations through the materials they use in making their art.

This installation of sculpture, In Rare Form, represents an unusual opportunity for the audience to be exposed to a number of amazing works that exemplify the idea of possibility in conceptual and formal approaches. As a survey, it also brings to light the important developments of sculpture practices amongst artists in the world of contemporary art today.

Artists featured in the exhibit include: Ben Bunch, Cary Baker, Kate Clark, Ryan Higgins, Christopher Manzione, Steven Millar, Albert Schweitzer, Philip Simmons, Gamble Staempfli, Teresa Sullivan and Jean-Marc Superville-Sovak.

The works will be on view through Saturday, April 23, 2011.

The Ann Street Gallery is a nonprofit art gallery specializing in contemporary emerging and established artists. The gallery is located at 104 Ann Street in Newburgh, and hours are Monday through Thursday 9 am-5 pm and Friday through Saturday 11 am-5 pm.
