Event Description

African American Heritage Music Trail 2018

Explore Newburgh and Beacon connection with the Underground Railroad as runaway slaves head for Canada to freedom.

The African American Heritage Music Trail will feature selections of songs sung by enslaved Africans in early America. They will musically move the audience through a historic timeline ending with jazz. The first performance will be a mass choir that will sing negro spirituals and traditional gospel music. The second showcase will be a jazz band performing freedom songs in a jazz genre. There will be two short readings; first about the history of the African American influence on music and secondly, a look at the African American settlement in the City of Newburgh.
