The Beacon Sloop Club’s 2017 winter lecture series continues on Thursday April 13th at 7:00 pm with “Activist Puppetry: Past and Present” with filmmaker Winnie Lambrecht, PhD and Patrick Wadden of the “Arm of the Sea”, at the Beacon Sloop Clubhouse, 2 Flynn Dr., Beacon NY (adjacent to the harbor, across from the train station).
The program will feature a new short documentary (19 minutes) on “Puppetry and Politics in 1939: The Vagabond Puppeteers. The film tells the story of four young New York artists, Mary Walton, Jerry Oberwager, Pete Seeger, and Harriet Holtzman who traveled through upstate New York in the summer of 1939 as “The Vagabond Puppeteers”. Their initial aim was to help rural farmers obtain electricity, but they soon realized that the true issue was the price of milk, which was so low that the farmers were producing it at a loss. They became active in the Dairy Farmers Union campaign of milk strikes by adapting their puppet performances to support the message of the strikes,
The program will continue with a presentation by Patrick Wadden co-founder and director ofof the Arm-of-the-Sea Theater which fuses visual storytelling with live music in contemporary works of mask and puppet theater. A perennial crowd favorite with both children and adults since their founding in 1982, Patrick will present video clips and commentary on the company’s 35-year creative journey exploring art, ecology and social action.
Join us for a night exploring the past and present of activist puppetry as an ephemeral but dynamic social dialogue.
